Coalition launches Libya attacks

Key points

  1. Western forces have launched air and missile strikes on Libya as part of a UN-backed plan to establish a no-fly zone and prevent government attacks on civilians. The US said more than 100 cruise missiles were fired at air defence sites.
  2. The Libyan leader, Col Muammar Gaddafi, said the Mediterranean and North Africa had become a war zone. Civilians and military targets in the region would be in danger, he warned
  3. The speaker of the Libyan parliament said civilian areas had been targeted, and there had been casualties. A BBC correspondent in Tripoli said it was calm with traffic still on the streets
  4. Reports from Benghazi say rebels have regained control of the city after driving out Col Gaddafi's forces. Roads to the east are clogged with car loads of people fleeing
  5. US President Barack Obama said the US was part of a broad coalition to answer the calls of a threatened people. But he reiterated that the US would not deploy troops on the ground
